Recently, six senior men travelled to the Shoals Sharks Masters 10K Open Water swim and put in a dominating performance. Jacob Shults, Brad Hollihan, and Kevin Byrne took the top three spots, respectively. All three finished under the 2:50 mark, with Jacob finishing in 2 hours 28 minutes.
Tyler Espy, Tyler Kaliszak, and Nick Olson also competed. Those three finished together, finishing the second 5k in under an hour and a half.

09/2009 Three HSA Swimmers Qualify for Southeastern All-Star Team
For the 2008-09 Long Course Season, HSA qualified three swimmers for the Southeastern All-Star Team. Both Chloe Hui and Mallory Underwood qualified in the 9-10 girls age group, while Chandler Espy qualified in the 11-12 boys age group. Qualification standards for the team can be found at www.seswim.org.

09/2009 10 & Under Girls Continue to Re-write the Record Books
At the Excel Fall Fest, four 10 & under HSA girls (Sarah Margaret Cimino, McKenzie Mokry, Mallory Underwood and Chloe Hui) swam to a new team record in the 200 freestyle. The team swam to a time of 1:54.54, breaking the previous record that was set in 1983.

Sarah Margaret Cimino also clipped time off the 100 back record, swimming to a time of 1:10.96. Her swim topped her relay mate Chloe Hui's record that was set a couple of weekends ago.

The relay time ranks 16th in the country this year.

09/2009 9-10 Girls Set Two New Team Records
Recently, a small contingent of 9-10 HSA swimmers travelled to Scottsboro, AL to swim at the Valley Radiology Fall Splash. During the course of competition, the three girls set two new team records and picked up the high point award for the meet.

Chloe Hui broke the 100 back record (Lauren Kaufman 1:11.99 from 1994), swimming to a 1:11.47.
Sarah Margaret Cimino broke the 50 back record (Jan King 32.59 from 1974), swimming to a 32.48.
Adding to the successful weekend was McKenzie Mokry winning the high point award for 9-10 girls.

10/30/09 HSA Begins Year With Successful Meet at Auburn
In the first full team meet of the year, HSA swimmers got off to a fast start. The 9-10 girls continued their record setting ways with Sarah Margaret Cimino and Chloe Hui again re-setting the 50 and 100 Back team records, respectively. Several swimmers managed to defeat a competitive crowd to win individual events.  Those swimmers were: Sarah Margaret Cimino, Cameron Conners, Chloe Hui, Tyler Kaliszak, Tehuti Taylor, and Mallory Underwood.

One of the new features you will see added to the meet results this year are the H.S.A. "Stepping Stones."  The object of these times is to give swimmers a progression towards a Southeastern cut, and a progression beyond once the Southeastern cut has been achieved. The gold, silver, and bronze cuts are a three year average of 1st, 8th, and 16th place at the previous three Southeasterns. The Southeastern cut is based on a three year average of 32nd place at Southeasterns for most events. The blue, red, and white cuts are based on a percintile chart that USA Swimming provides. Hopefully, all athletes will find these as another way to help them set reachable, progressive goals.

Based on previous best times, the following swimmers achieved new Stepping Stone times. Listed is their highest achieved:
Silver: Sarah Margaret Cimino, Chloe Hui, McKenzie Mokry, and Mallory Underwood
Bronze: Szymmy Day and Isaac Devaney
SEQT: Cameron Conners, Macon Graves, Ellen Haapoja, Alex Krause, Lindsey Martin, Liz Olson, Afura Taylor, and Auset Taylor
Blue: David Butler, Megan Hinely, Brad Hollihan, and Regan Weakley
Red: Jackson Graves, Erin Paul, and Tchaasu Taylor
White: Amanda Clark, Darby Mokry, and Joe Swing

HSA will next be in action at the HSA hosted Fran Norris Invitational over the weekend of November 7th and 8th.

At the recent Southeastern Championships in Nashville, TN, the H.S.A. team swam to a 7th place finish at the Southeastern Championships. The performance was highlighted by 9 individual records and 3 new relay records. On Friday night, the 11-12 boys relay of Isaac Devaney, Sam Vasquez, Macon Graves, and Chandler Espy crushed their own record set in February (1:46.03) by swimming to a time of 1:44.23. The 11-12 boys were not done with the relay records though, as on Saturday night they broke the 1985 medley relay record of Crawford, Johnson, Shandor, and Jason (1:59.64) by swimming to a time of 1:57.78. The relay consisted of Isaac Devaney, David Butler, Chandler Espy, and Macon Graves. Not to be outdone by the 11-12's, the Senior Men set their own medley relay record. The relay of Tyler Kaliszak, Cameron Conners, Tyler Espy, and Riley Mog broke the 1991 record (3:36.81) by swimming to a time of 3:33.08. The relay was also a Summer Junior National Cut.

Speaking of Junior National Cuts, both Cameron Conners and Tyler Kaliszak added to their events they have qualified in for this summer's Junior National Championships in Irvine, CA. Conners swam to a 200 breast bonus cut, adding to his 100 breast, while Kaliszak swam to both the 100 and 200 breast cuts and added the 200 IM bonus cut. These swims also highlighted the 9 individual team records set at the meet. Kaliszak set the 100 breast team record (Cameron Conners 57.10 12/4/09) by swimming to a time of 56.32. Kaliszak and Conners both swam under the old team record in the 200 breast (Cameron Conners 2:08.98 12/5/09), with Kaliszak setting the final time at 2:05.44. Kaliszak also reset his own team record in the 200 IM (1:53.78) by swimming to a time of 1:53.63.

The first was Kristen Owen's 50 fly record of 30.54, which she broke by going 30.48. The second was Katherine Rhodes 100 IM record of 1:09.53, which she broke by swimming to a 1:07.46.

The last two records were set by Chandler Espy. Espy broke James Salazar's 50 back record (27.51 1993) by swimming to a time of 27.32. He also swam to a 59.46 in the 100 IM, which broke Jeffrey Smith's 1:00.64 record from 1994.

The meet was also highlighted by several event wins and final swims. 06/28/10 Team Records and Stepping Stone Cuts Fall at NAC Summer Sizzler
With some of the top teams in the country in attendance, HSA swimmers put a dent in the record books over the weekend at the NAC Summer Sizzler. Mallory Underwood wiped out three of the oldest team records on the books over the weekend. Mallory bettered two of Kristen Owen's 9-10 team records from 1983, in both the 50 and 100 free. Mallory's times of 30.59 and 1:07.15 bettered the previous records of 31.04 and 1:07.48. She also bettered Lauren Kaufmann's team record in the 50 back of 36.44 by swimming to a time of 36.02.

The meet also saw several HSA swimmers finish within the top 8 of events. Those swimmers were Sarah Margaret Cimino, Cameron Conners, Szymmy Day, Macon Graves, Alison Hu, Mallory Underwood, and George Wong. In what served as the last chance for many HSA swimmers to qualify for the summer Southeasterns meet, several swimmers added to their HSA Stepping Stone Cuts. Those swimmers were:

Gold: Mallory Underwood
Silver: Macon Graves
Bronze: Sarah Margaret Cimino, Emily Vasquez, and George Wong
SEQT: Renae Blasingame, Kevin Byrne, Maya Day, Phil Deaton, Sara Neil, Valerie Nubbe, Erin Paul, Christina Tarsitano, and Sam Vasquez
Blue: Jackson Graves
Red: Maria Bell, Claire Blasingame, Ian Blasingame, Emily Paul, and Jared Sutphin
